A Punta Gorda couple died in a crash in Cape Coral on Wednesday.

Cape Coral police said Joseph E. Voll and Sue Ellen Voll were killed when their Mazda CX5 was hit by a dump truck on Burnt Store Road North near Caloosa Parkway.

Police said the dump truck’s driver tried to avoid rear-ending another dump truck that had stopped to make a left turn, and in doing so, crossed the center line and struck the Volls’ SUV.

The dump truck driver was not injured. The Volls died at the scene, police said.

The crash occurred around 8:40 a.m. and closed Burnt Store Road North for more than seven hours.
