The Florida Highway Patrol is searching for a driver that fled the scene of a fatal vehicle crash on State Road 31 on Friday night.

The 3-vehicle crash happened just south of Bermont Road at around 6:15 p.m. on Friday, according to a news release.

Troopers say an SUV, possibly a Lincoln, was northbound on SR-31 when it tried to overtake other northbound traffic by driving in the southbound lanes.

A second vehicle driving south tried to avoid a head-on collision with the SUV and drove off the road, lost control and then traveled back onto the roadway, hitting a third vehicle.

The 52-year-old male driver of the vehicle who tried to take evasive action was taken to Bayfront hospital in Punta Gorda, where he was pronounced dead. The man was from Fort Myers.

The vehicle he collided with was driven by a 61-year-old Orlando man, who sustained serious injuries in the crash. He was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

The crash caused a complete roadblock on SR-31 for hours.

The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 239-344-1730 or SWFL Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477).
