A 10-year-old was hit by a car and injured Thursday morning while walking to his bus stop in Bonita Springs.

Johnny Domingo Mateo Nicolas was walking along Bonita Drive off Old US-41 Road. Bonita Drive has no sidewalks and construction is going on there right now.

Johnny was struck near Woods Circle, and immediately after the crash, his family heard his screams.

“He didn’t say anything. He was just screaming because he was run over,” said Andrea Estevan Tomas, Johnny’s grandmother.

Johnny’s mom came running to the scene and held her son as he was bleeding in the middle of the street. A helicopter was dispatched to fly Johnny to Lee Memorial Hospital, but it couldn’t find a place to land, so he was taken by ambulance, his parents following.

“My son went to take care of his boy… who’s going to give him food… who’s going to pay their rent, we need help,” Tomas said.

A witness to the crash said she doesn’t know who’s to blame – the driver or Johnny. She said the ongoing roadwork makes it tough for everyone.

“The road is a problem anyways because of the construction, and the children really don’t know which side to ride on because of the construction.”

Johnny suffered a large gash on his leg and some other cuts during the ordeal, but his condition has not been made available.

The sheriff’s office has yet to share its crash report.
