Credit: Collier County Sheriff’s Office Sunday, Collier County Sheriff’s Office a man in connection with armed carjackings in North Naples. The first carjacking happened Sunday night at a Circle K located at 5606 Tavila Circle, with the rest of the evening’s events beginning around 6 p.m. According to the arrest report, Matthew Vance, 26, stole a 2019 Mercedes convertible from a home in the city of Naples. He was driving the convertible northbound on I-75 when he lost control, crashing off the shoulder near mile marker 110 in Collier. A driver told deputies that she was driving slowly past the crash site just before 7 p.m. Vance approached the woman’s car while holding a large hunting knife. He attempted to forcibly enter her driver’s side door and she sped away. The suspect then got a ride in a construction vehicle to that Circle K in North Naples. He attempted to carjack a person whose car was parked at a gas pump. Vance opened the driver’s side door and this time was able to successfully remove the driver from the car. He stole cash from inside the vehicle and attempted to steal the car itself. However, the victim fought back and was able to take the keys from Vance. The victim also told detectives about the large knife that Vance was carrying during the incident. Vance tried to carjack yet another person while the driver was pumping gas but was unsuccessful after that victim fought back. This victim was able to grab the cash that Vance stole from the other victim and return it. Collier deputies took Vance into custody after he attempted to escape by swimming through a nearby canal. The Naples Police Department is investigating the initial car theft from around 6 p.m. Also according to a report, afterward, Vance was taken to NCH North for treatment. As a deputy waited for medical clearance, Vance tried to escape from him. He began running from the deputy south toward Immokalee Road and ran through some woods that ended at a canal. The deputy checked the canal, with the prior knowledge that Vance fled to a canal earlier in the evening. He called for backup and eventually was able to grab hold of Vance’s arm as those deputies arrived. Vance, of Naples, was taken to the Naples Jail Center and faces two counts of robbery – armed carjacking and petty theft. Vance remained in custody at the jail Monday.
