More than 50 math textbooks were rejected by the state of Florida’s Department of Education. It’s the longest list of rejected math textbooks in state history. The Florida Department of Education decided the material in the books does not meet its standards. On Thursday, the department shared a few examples of the offending texts on its website. “You do have things like social and emotional learning and some of the other things that are more political in there,” DeSantis said during a recent news conference. WINK News was able to find two of the textbooks rejected by the state. The Department of Education said its responsibility is to ensure textbooks do not include unsolicited strategies. Kevin Daly, the president of the Lee County Teacher’s Association, said he wants to see what those strategies are. “I believe in transparency. And so, you know, it’d be great if they could tell me, you know, in this book, this is specifically what the problem is in that book. This is specifically what the problem is,” Daly said. First Grade Florida Reveal Math, published by McGraw Hill Publishing, is one of the books singled out by the education department. Nearly every page includes a small section that says “Math is mindset” and asks a question relating to one’s feelings like, “how can you act with your classmates to create a safe classroom culture?” or “what helps you feel calm when you are angry?” “It’s not about how you feel about the problem or to introduce some of these other things, it’s, there’s a right answer and there’s a wrong answer. And we want all our students getting the right answers,” DeSantis said. In the book “Thinking Quantitatively: Communicating with Numbers,” statements discuss cultural norms and the belief that men are better than women in math. It also includes an example that discusses the probability of a Black person being killed by a gunshot in the U.S. “the light of transparency, I think really kind of clears up any confusion here or any doubt,” Daly said. “I think as long as there’s some, some perception of it not being a transparent process. That’s what leads people’s minds to kind of wander in different directions.” The list of rejected books is: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: 1. Florida’s B.E.S.T.
