A 6-year-old is back and safe with the police. The girl was handed off to officers on Wednesday afternoon.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued an alert earlier in the day on Wednesday that the girl had been missing since July 1.

WINK News was there when the little girl’s parents handed her over to Fort Myers police detectives, safe and sound.

Her father told WINK News that what happened is just a misunderstanding between himself and DCF. He said he doesn’t understand what happened.

“I love my daughter. I raised my daughter when she was, one day to six years old, I bathe her, I take her to school, they do everything for her. And I never try to hurt her nothing. And they threatening me to take my daughter,” said Yassir Hassan, the father of the 6-year-old girl.

Hassan said his daughter was never missing. He said she was with her mother, who is no longer in a relationship with Hassan.

“She took her to Fort Lauderdale to her grandma. And then, when I see the news today, I called her, and I told her to bring her back,” said Hassan.

Hassan said DCF got involved after a car crash a few months ago. Fort Myers police will not say if DCF, the department, or someone else reported the child missing.

“I’m a good father, and I take care of my daughter, and I own my own business,” said Hassan.

Fort Myers police say the 6-year-old girl is now in DCF custody, and DCF will decide what happens next.
