The Collier County Clerk of Court is warning Southwest Floridians of a scam happening across the state.

Scammers are contacting Florida residents claiming they missed jury duty and saying they must pay a fine by purchasing gift cards.

The scheme has been reported in Manatee and Sarasota counties, but the extent is still unclear, the clerk’s office said.

Clerk Crystal Kinzel warns residents not to give out personal or financial information over the phone to strangers, especially if they act aggressively or threaten. If anyone asks for payment s via a gift card, that’s a red flag that it’s likely a scam.

“If you receive a call from someone saying you’ve missed jury duty and need to pay a fine, immediately hang up the phone,” Kinzel said. “Our office does not offer the option to purchase a gift card; Please contact our office immediately to report fraud.”
