How Gabby Petito’s family is using her story to bring change.

Petito’s parents want her to be honored by lighting up the sky in remembrance of her on Aug. 27.

Gabby Petito was reported missing by her parents in September of last year later on it was ruled that Brian Laundrie her fiance strangled her to death and then took his own life.

Dr. Brent Blue, a Teton County, Wyoming Coroner said, “we hereby find the cause and manner of death to be, the cause of death by strangulation and manner is homicide.”

It is estimated that Laundrie killed her on Aug. 27, 2021.

Blue is responsible for finding the cause of her death

In October of last year, Petito isn’t the only victim to be killed by a romantic partner.

“Unfortunately this is all one of many deaths around the country of people who are involved in domestic violence and it’s unfortunate that these other deaths do not get as much coverage as this one,” Blue said.

When Petito’s family laid Gabby to rest they were struggling to process this tragedy.

Nichole Schmid, Gabby’s mother said, “That’s the biggest takeaway I got from it, was that she’s changing a lot of lives, she’s helping a lot of people, a lot of people love her. And…We’re very blessed to have that,”

One year later, Petito’s family said Gabby has become a symbol for those in domestic violence relationships.

Petito’s dad tweeted, “You have inspired so many to live, travel, and leave their unhealthy relationships. We love you gabby.”

Aug. 27 is the anniversary of the death of Gabby Petito and that’s when the family wants everyone around the world to light a candle in their yard to honor her.
