In October of last year, Petito isn’t the only victim to be killed by a romantic partner.

“Unfortunately this is all one of many deaths around the country of people who are involved in domestic violence and it’s unfortunate that these other deaths do not get as much coverage as this one,” Blue said.

When Petito’s family laid Gabby to rest they were struggling to process this tragedy.

Nichole Schmid, Gabby’s mother said, “That’s the biggest takeaway I got from it, was that she’s changing a lot of lives, she’s helping a lot of people, a lot of people love her. And…We’re very blessed to have that,”

One year later, Petito’s family said Gabby has become a symbol for those in domestic violence relationships.

Petito’s dad tweeted, “You have inspired so many to live, travel, and leave their unhealthy relationships. We love you gabby.”
