Naples residents may notice their tap water tastes a little different on Thursday, as the city is changing its water disinfection process.

Those of you on kidney dialysis will need to contact your supplier or a physician to install proper filtering devices if needed. The same goes for those with fish tanks; officials say to visit a pet store for pre-treatment of the water to avoid any problems with the chlorine.

Terry Savage, water plant superintendent for the City of Naples, says this procedure will not affect people’s health and that it is still safe to drink and take a shower. He explains that this is an annual procedure required by Naples as part of water quality maintenance.

“This is a recommendation by the DEP that, once per year, a utility that uses a chlorine as their disinfectant switch for a 30-day period to, essentially, purge the system or cleanse the system,” Savage said.

Customers may experience a slight change in the taste, color and odor of their tap water.

This change is expected to last throughout September. City officials say to contact the water plant if you have any questions or concerns.
