Those with golf carts will have to wait a little bit longer to know if they can drive on certain roads after the city of Fort Myers tabled the Tuesday discussion.

Many felt it was too big of a safety concern given all the accidents and traffic on the roads lately. Tuesday was just the first round of discussions so nothing is completely out of the question but it will take a bit more work to convince the council.

“I feel like I’m having a discussion about maybe legalizing something that’s already happening on a really prevalent basis,” said Fort Myers city councilman Fred Burson.

Exactly why Burson asked the city council to discuss creating an ordinance that would allow golf cars on certain city streets. The streets included would have speed limits of less than 35 mph, as long as they meet safety requirements like driver’s license and safety lighting.

“I think some of the benefits is lower impact on the environment, electric golf carts, and there’s a lot of them in use already around the city,” said Burson.

But, many on the council have safety concerns about this idea.

“No matter how we look at it right now, golf carts are looked at as toys. I think it’s going to be more of a safety issue for me,” said Terolyn Watson, a member of the Fort Myers city council.

“With the amount of vehicle accidents we have on a continuous basis. I don’t think it would be smart for us to allow golf carts right,” said Teresa Watkins Brown, another member of the Fort Myers city council.

Nevertheless, they acknowledged this may be a way to regulate the cars already on the streets.

“Whether there’s an ordinance or not, golf carts are going to be used. Safety issue as well. I don’t think anything you could do to allow for decorum if you will in the golf cart usage, I don’t think would be a bad idea,” said Darla Bonk another member of the Fort Myers city council.

In the end, the city decided to do more research and come back when it has more answers.

The city attorney and manager will start looking into golf cart ordinances in other areas to see what it would look like. Once the council sees some examples and data it can resume discussions.
