The German American Social Club announced on Wednesday morning that Oktoberfest 2022 is canceled.

“First, we acknowledge that our club is located within a federally proclaimed disaster area and that our local infrastructure cannot support such an activity while providing extensive relief and recovery efforts anticipated to continue far beyond this month,” the club wrote in a press release.

The club goes on to say that now is a time for “mourning and compassion for survivors” rather than celebration and that members of the club have experienced their own property damages and continued long-term lack of utilities that make it logistically impossible to prepare for and hold the event.

“Thank you for your understanding and patience,” the statement concluded. “God bless the restoration of all Southwest Florida as we strive to gain strength together.”

Event organizers told WINK News there is still no power throughout the entire building and they are unsure when it will return.

There isn’t enough time to fully prepare of Oktoberfest.

The annual festival typically takes place during the last two weeks of October. Originating from Munich, the local festivities bring authentic German food, beer and games for families to enjoy.

Sandra Mix, who moved to Cape Coral from Germany in 2016, said she is disappointed. It’s a tradition for her family.
