Deadly wrong-way crash on US-27 in Highlands County

A man was killed and another seriously injured after a Sunday morning wrong-way crash on US-27 in Highlands County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 69-year-old Sebring man riding in the passenger seat died after a head-on crash. That car, driven by a 41-year-old woman from Lake Placid, was driving the wrong way on US-27, going north in the southbound inside lane past the SR-70 intersection.

Two men from Immokalee were driving south in the southbound inside lane of US-27 nearing the SR-70 intersection when the cars collided. The car driving the wrong way rotated and was forced off the roadway before stopping on the west grass shoulder.

According to the report, the 69-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and was the only person not wearing a seatbelt. The driver sustained minor injuries from the crash.

The passenger in the other car, a 30-year-old man, sustained serious injuries from the crash. The 23-year-old driver sustained minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
