Driver accused of DUI in deadly Charlotte County crash on I-75

Drew Stangelo, a 25-year-old man from Louisiana was arrested for DUI after a 67-year-old man died in a crash on I-75 Friday evening.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a sedan driven by Stangelo was going South on the inside lane of I-75, just South of Tuckers Grade.

Meanwhile, a sports car driven by a 67-year-old man from Fort Myers was on the outside lane of I-75. And another sports car driven by a 31-year-old man from New York was in the outside lane in front of the Fort Myers man.

When Stangelo’s vehicle neared the two sports cars the sedan veered from the inside to the outside lane.

The front of the sedan crashed into the right rear side of the Fort Myers man’s sports car.

Then the left side of the sedan crashed into the right side of the New Yorker’s sports car.

After the crash, the sedan stopped on the inside grass shoulder.

The Fort Myers man’s sports car rotated and overturned before stopping on the grass shoulder.

The New Yorker’s sports car rotated and stopped between the outside lane and the outside paved shoulder.

The 67-year-old Fort Myers man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stangelo was arrested at the scene for DUI Manslaughter and booked into the Charlotte Jail.

The crash remains under investigation.

FHP wants the public to know throughout the month of March, FHP is reminding motorists that driving impaired, whether under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both have real consequences. Law enforcement monitors Florida’s roadways to keep the public safe. Nevertheless, everybody has to be responsible when they are impaired and not get behind the wheel.
