A Punta Gorda man was sentenced on Friday to 6 1/2 years in prison for possessing child pornography.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, Jeffrey Edward Fontenot, 40, was adjudicated guilty and sentenced for computer pornography (prohibited use of a computer) and possession of child pornography. He was also designated a sexual predator.

In August 2022, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received three cyber tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, reported by Google. The report contained files believed to be child sexual exploitation material, being transmitted by a person using the screen name of Jeffrey Fontenot. Google also provided an email address and cell phone number associated with the account, which also linked to Fontenot.

CCSO began an investigation. It was believed the illegal activity occurred in Charlotte County. Fontenot’s accounts were fully examined, and numerous images and videos of child pornography were found stored in his Google Photos. Fontenot was then arrested.
