The Lee County School District has had a tough school year amid a teacher shortage, pay problems, bus problems and new leadership changes.

The district’s annual State of Our Schools Breakfast featured interim superintendent Dr. Kenneth Savage as the keynote speaker.

Savage delivered an update on the status of Lee County public schools.

During his update, Savage discussed the abovementioned challenges and what the school district must work on.

He then spoke about the accomplishments throughout the school year and the district’s vision moving forward.

WINK News spoke with Savage about the event and the importance of the community partners.

“What this is really about is acknowledging partnerships because, from a district standpoint, we can’t do it alone. It’s not just the school district. It’s the school district,” said Savage. “We stand on the shoulders of all of our partners, and we need our partners because the challenges we have are some of the greatest we’ve ever had, so we need our partners more now than ever.”

Along with Savage’s update, the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools honored the business community and recognized the business partners of the year.

Savage has been in the role of acting superintendent for about a month after the district parted ways with the previous superintendent, Dr. Christopher Bernier.

Savage stated that he is not planning to run for superintendent, but he will finish filling out Bernier’s term until the next election.
