The Cape Coral City Council held a meeting to discuss several topics this Wednesday afternoon.

Council members were asked to decide whether or not to install speed detection systems for the fall school year.

A recently passed law allows Florida counties to enforce speed limits in school zones through cameras.

Wednesday was the final day for council members to decide on the ordinance.

They decided that if you go more than 10 miles over the speed limit it’s a $100 fine.

This would be enforced 30 minutes before through 30 minutes after the start of school and end of school.

Mayor John Gunter is all for it.

“The outcome, hopefully, will be that we will have safer schools in areas for children. That’s the ultimate goal, and that is the one particular reason why I will support it. It’s just another opportunity to provide safer schools and for children walking to and from school,” he said.

It’s a done deal.

The city discussed it at Wednesday’s meeting, and they approved the motion.

We asked the city, and they said there is no timeline yet for when this would be implemented.
