The Cape Coral Police Department responded to an incident involving a man being crushed while working underneath his car.

Police responded to the incident at Southwest 19th Terrace and Chiquita Boulevard South at around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The north and southbound lanes of Chiquita Boulevard South were closed, and police diverted traffic while crews responded to the scene.

A blue truck was blocked off on the median with tarps and black barricades. The man’s identity has not yet been released.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department, the victim was fixing a transmission issue near the front left wheel when the car rolled backward onto him.

No other vehicles were involved, and police said traffic issues did not influence the investigation.

The police department released tips to minimize the risk of losing one’s life while working underneath a vehicle:

  • Ensure all car brakes are applied, including the emergency/parking brake.
  • Ensure you are working on a flat and paved surface.
  • If you use a car jack, ensure it is fully functional and properly placed underneath the frame.
  • Test the car before going under by pushing hard against the hood to see if it moves.
