A Port Charlotte man accused of throwing a machete at a bicyclist has been arrested by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened on Friday. However, the reason he did it is still unclear.

Charlotte County deputies said Andrew Shattuck, 40, was walking along Collingswood Boulevard on Friday, talking to himself out loud, when he started shouting homophobic and racist slurs at the bicyclist.

Moments later, Shattuck threw the machete toward the victim. The cyclist said he ran away, ditching his bike as Shattuck hit a tree with the weapon.

The cyclist told police he didn’t need medical care.

Shattuck was eventually located walking down El Jobeam Rd. and was immediately detained. Police collected the machete and transported Shattuck to Lee County Jail.

Shattuck faces aggravated assault charges.
