The planetarium at the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium is now open after its original opening date on Sunday was postponed.

Since Friday, they’ve been closed for maintenance, specifically getting new carpeting and chairs.

In July, the planetarium experienced a hazmat situation after a projector bulb broke, causing a mercury spill.

Three people were taken to the hospital for mercury exposure.

Though the center’s reopening was slightly delayed, the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium will be open to everyone on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

The Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium will host a celebratory grand opening event and free open house on Sept. 27.

Festivities will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by screenings throughout the day.

Later that night there will be a gala event and VIP reception and exclusive movie screening from 6 to 8 p.m.
