Clewiston Police: toddler dies from accidental gunshot wound

New information has been released about the 2-year-old Clewiston boy who died from a single gunshot wound.

According to authorities, this was an accidental and isolated incident.

According to the Clewiston Police Department, on Wednesday at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers responded to a duplex home on South Lopez Street about a gunshot.

Officers investigated the area, where they found a 2-year-old boy dead from a single gunshot wound, into the early hours of Thursday. The child was not at home alone.

The family rented the home, and the property owner said that no incidents like this had happened before.

Family friends said the boy, named Josiah, was a bubbly boy, full of energy.

Clewiston police, the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office, and the medical examiner’s office also responded to the scene. The home is very close to the sheriff’s office.

The scene is clear as of Thursday morning.

The preliminary investigation determined that the firearm was owned by someone who lived at the home, and no external parties were involved in the incident.

Clewiston police have taken possession of the gun, and the investigation continues.

The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is investigating with the Clewiston Police Department.
