If you’re thinking of heading to the beach in Collier County, heed this warning.

The Department of Health in Collier County has issued a red tide alert for the presence of red tide near Barefoot Beach State Preserve, Vanderbilt Beach and Seagate.

For the past few months, red tide warnings have been appearing on beaches across the west coast of Florida.

Lee County beaches and also Charlotte County beaches have already been subjected to red tide warnings.

“We know that there was a bunch of small fish floating dead in the top of the water as we were going out in the gulf,” said resident John Stencil. “I asked the captain what he thought it was, and he said he thought it was from the fish kill from the red tide up in the Fort Myers area. If we see a bunch of the seaweed out on the beaches we’ll probably be leaving because it affects your breathing a little bit.”
