Deputy injured, suspect killed in shooting near State Road 72 in DeSoto County

Published: Updated:

A suspect wanted on a child enticement charge out of Georgia was killed in a deputy-involved shooting early Saturday morning in DeSoto County.

The incident began Friday afternoon when the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia that Matthew Steven Rollie, a 29-year-old man, was in the area.

Rollie had an active warrant for the enticement of a child for indecent purposes and had also failed to register as a sexual offender in DeSoto County.

DCSO deputies searched for Rollie throughout the afternoon and evening but were unsuccessful in locating him.

At approximately 2:16 a.m. on Saturday, two DCSO deputies stopped a vehicle on State Road 72 near Thigpen Road and Addison Avenue.

The passenger of the vehicle was identified as Rollie. As deputies attempted to identify him, Rollie allegedly drew a firearm and opened fire, striking one of the deputies multiple times.

The deputies returned fire, and Rollie was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured deputy is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be recovering.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation into the shooting, as per DCSO protocol for deputy-involved incidents.

Sheriff Potter stated that updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The investigation remains ongoing.
