ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Authorities say a pair of central Florida thieves led a racketeering operation responsible for stealing more than $100,000 in electronic toothbrushes and cash from supermarkets and drug stores.

Orange County Sheriff’s deputies say the money brought in by 64-year-old Mary Curtiss and 44-year-old Clint Curtiss mostly came from stealing items and returning them as if they had been purchased. They were arrested Tuesday and remain in the Orange County Jail.

The Orlando Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1BZgxIo ) reports they stole toothbrushes worth more than $100 and would then visit other stores to buy replacement heads. They altered receipts to make it appear they had also bought the toothbrushes. Employees would process the return and give the Curtiss’ their money back.

Jail records don’t indicate whether they’ve hired attorneys.
