COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Dozens of law enforcement officers laced up their sneakers to benefit Special Olympics athletes.

The annual torch run kicked off around 7:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Runners started at the Collier County Sheriff’s Office and ran along US 41 north for almost 5 miles.

Organizers say it’s something they look forward to every year.

“It’s just a great thing. We get such great support from law enforcement all throughout the county, and really all throughout the state. This is just a way they show their appreciation for Special Olympics,” said David McKenzie, the director for Special Olympics in Collier County.

The torch is carried by local and state law enforcement officers all the way to the Opening Ceremonies of Florida’s annual State Summer Games.
