CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. – A young man from Palm Harbor was killed Saturday while driving an ATV at the Redneck Yacht Club.

Nicholas Kirk, 20, was driving an ATV when he crashed around noon at the racetrack in Charlotte County.

State troopers said a swamp buggy was towing another swamp buggy, when Kirk hit the rope towing the two buggies. Kirk snapped his neck on the rope and died at the scene.

Marlayna Gomez, 19, from Clearwater was also on the ATV and seriously injured. She was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital and later released.

This weekend the Redneck Yacht Club is hosting Memorial Day Mayhem, which is a weekend long event that includes mud truck races, air boat races and ATV races.

It is unclear if the driver was participating in an event at the time of the crash.
