KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) – A Miami-Dade County Commissioner has been charged with drunken driving in Key West after authorities say he was going more than double the speed limit on his motorcycle.

Key West police say 55-year-old Jose “Pepe” Diaz was pulled over Saturday night for traveling 74 mph in a 30 mph zone. The officer reported that Diaz’s Harley-Davidson fell over because Diaz failed to put the kickstand down.

The Miami Herald (http://goo.gl/TGbWKw ) reports that Diaz was booked into the Monroe County Jail and released on $1,000 bail the next day.

Diaz released a statement Sunday saying that his lawyers have advised him not to discuss the case.

Diaz has served on the commission since 2002. Before that, he was the mayor of Sweetwater.

Sunday marked the end of the Key West Poker Run motorcycle event.
