Stricter punishment for revenge porn offenders

Published:

LEE COUNTY, Fla.,- A new law will go into effect to make revenge porn a crime. That’s when people post sexually explicit images of their ex spouses or partners online without consent.
Tomorrow, 27 new laws take effect in Florida, including one about revenge porn. Starting tomorrow, posting photos and videos of your exes online without their consent will be illegal. Posting those videos that are meant to be private will be a first degree misdemeanor.
First offenders could face one year in prison and a $1,000 fine, but the punishment gets worse for repeat offenders making the crime a third degree felony punishable by five years in prison and $5,000 in fines.
Victims in these revenge porn cases can now file lawsuits against the offenders. It’s important to note, tings like text messages and emails are not part of the bill.
