PINOLE, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say a San Francisco Bay Area high school student was arrested on suspicion of distributing a prescription anxiety medication that sent five students to the hospital with overdose symptoms.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1W8P2Tc ) Wednesday that police spokesman Sgt. Matt Avery says the Pinole Valley High School student, who was not identified due to his age, was taken into custody and booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of selling or giving away a controlled substance.

The arrest stems from an incident last Thursday when seven students were observed acting strangely. Five were hospitalized after officials determined they had taken Xanax and were showing symptoms of overdose.

Contra Costa County officials issued a public health advisory after the incident warning parents and children of the extreme hazards and risks associated with the misuse of prescription medication.
