PLACIDA, Fla. – You now have the chance to take a look below the water line and see what life is like underwater, all while staying dry on a submarine. The S-44 Submarine replica is now docked in Placida and ready to give you a historical and unique look at life on a sub. The S-44 is a pre-WWII replica of an S-boat sub that would’ve sailed back in the 1920’s up to the WWII era. Originally 52 S-boats were constructed, however today none of them are left and this replica is the closest you’ll find. The S-44 replica has been scaled back to three times the size or its original design and although it does not dive, it can cruise and give you a view beneath water. Three large glass windows below deck allow guests to see what the water and marine life looks like below the surface. The quarters are tight and small but the experience is a unique opportunity whether you’re a child, history buff, adult or just a lover of life on the water. Tours and cruises on the S-44 Submarine can be made by appointment by calling, 805-441-7463 or visit www.S44.org for more information on this submarine and the story of how it was built. Currently the S-44 is docked behind the Fishery Restaurant at 13000 Fishery Road in Placida.
