ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – The board that governs Florida’s public universities has approved plans by the University of Central Florida to open a campus in downtown Orlando.

The Florida Board of Governors on Wednesday approved UCF’s plans for a 68-acre parcel of land that used to be the location of the arena where the Orlando Magic played.

UCF officials say the downtown campus eventually will serve 7,700 UCF and Valencia College students.

Programs will be offered in digital media, health information technology and hospitality.

UCF now awaits approval by the Florida Legislature for $20 million in funding. UCF will chip in another $20 million.

The school intends to raise an additional $20 million from outside sources and has earned $16 million in pledges toward that goal.
