ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) – A Georgia woman died on Saturday after she was struck by a falling palm tree outside her home.

Glynn County coroner Joe Chapman told the Florida Times-Union that the death of 70-year-old Zeidee Carruth was a freak accident.

Chapman said that Carruth had stepped outside her home on St. Simons Island when she was struck. The accident happened about 10 feet from her door.

Chapman said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The island had experienced high winds for most of the day. Power was lost on a portion of the island after a limb was blown onto a power line.
