MGN TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – The parents of Florida students who opted out of the state’s standardized tests are suing because their children weren’t promoted to the fourth grade. A Tallahassee judge is holding a hearing Friday on whether to block the state law that school districts are relying on to hold them back. Fourteen parents and grandparents from seven counties contend their children and grandchildren were held back because they refused to take the state’s high-stakes standardized tests. Florida schools use the Florida Standards Assessment to determine if third graders are reading at grade level. The lawsuit states that the children should have been promoted because they got good grades and had demonstrated in class that they could read at grade level. The Florida Department of Education is refusing to comment on the lawsuit.
