FORT MYERS, Fla. — A drug deal gone bad led one man to shoot another in self-defense late Tuesday night, the Fort Myers Police Department said.

Alfred Card, 20, is facing drug and child neglect charges following an investigation into the incident that sent 22-year-old Alphonso James to Lee Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds, according to police. James is expected to survive.

Detectives said James showed up at a home on the 3000 block of Franklin Court where Card was present to buy drugs. James attempted to rob Card while the transaction was taking place shortly before midnight, according to the detectives. Card wrested the gun away from him and shot him, according to police.

Charges are pending against James, who was still in the hospital Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Police said they found 5.2 grams of MDMA and a digital scale at the residence and 1.3 grams of marijuana in Card’s pocket. The child neglect charge Card is facing stems from allegedly selling drugs out of his home where his son lives.
