FORT MYERS, Fla.- Pain and stiffness of the joints are often signs of osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. The risk of osteoarthritis increases with age, and may be caused by obesity or traumatic injury. While it is not the first line of defense, surgery is sometimes the necessary treatment option for advanced osteoarthritis. Brian Carmichael, a registered nurse in orthopedics at Gulf Coast Medical Center, stopped by the studio to talk about osteoarthritis and preparing for surgery.
