PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – About 6,000 gallons of sewage leaked into the ground and nearby waterways around the corner of Calumet Boulevard and St. Paul Drive, according to the county’s utilities services department.

A car hit the sewer line, causing the leak sometime before Tuesday at 10 a.m., which is when the odor from the leak was reported to authorities. About 200 to 300 gallons flowed into Margo Waterway, said Dave Watson, Charlotte County’s utilities services manager. Crews were able to recover about 5,000 gallons from the leak using septic trucks, Watson said.

The cleanup efforts were completed and the affected area was sanitized by 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Watson said.
