SOUTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — George Mabie was an Air Force veteran. Betty Mabie, his wife of more than 60 years, was an artist and writer.

Their lives came to an end Saturday when they died of injuries suffered in a crash not far from their home in the Siesta Bay RV Resort. Investigators found George Mabie at fault for pulling in front of another car as he tried to turn from the resort onto Summerlin Road.

Several people have voiced concerns about the intersection at M Street and Summerlin. Paul Mabie, George’s brother, was a passenger in the car and said his brother didn’t see the other vehicle.

“You can’t blame him, because we could all do that,” Paul Mabie said. “We could all make these mistakes.”

He took a philosophical approach as he remembered his brother. They were on the way to church at the time of the crash.

“It’s a sad thing that they went, but you know, it’s wonderful that I guess they’re together,” Paul Mabie said. “George would not have been happy without her. It’s a shame that that happened.”
