NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. – A child died after being hit by a truck Sunday night on Slater Road.

Nathan Carroll, of North Fort Myers, was riding a bicycle when he was hit. He was trauma alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

He later succumbed to his injuries, according to LCSO. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The crash, which happened just before 6:30 p.m., shut down Slater Road between Golden and Whitehead roads, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

There were no lights on the road. A 2006 Ford was driving east on Slater Road, and a bicyclist was travelling west in the east lanes without lights or reflectors on his bike, according to the press release.

It was not a hit and run, deputies said. The driver, Gwendolyn A. Mackey, of North Fort Myers, was initially unaware that he hit someone but stopped to check, according to LCSO.

LCSO conducted an investigation of the crash, and did not find the driver at fault, as the bicyclist violated the right of way, according to the press release.

No further information was immediately available.
