Charlotte County man accused of running over sheriff’s deputy

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – A Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputy was hit by a car Thursday morning at Riverwood Golf Club.

The driver, 26-year-old James CJ Swore, was arrested and the deputy, whom the sheriff’s office did not identify, was treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital.

Swore ran over the deputy as he attempted to flee after the deputy confronted him near 4100 Riverwood Drive, according to the sheriff’s office. He led deputies on a brief chase before crashing through a gate.

Nearby residents initially called deputies to the scene to report him and his car as suspicious. Swore is homeless, deputies said.

He’s facing charges for aggravated battery on a deputy, aggravated fleeing to elude, criminal mischief with damage, and several narcotics charges.
