Fog, limited visibility heightens concerns for SWFL drivers

Published: Updated:

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Drivers were greeted with heavy fog Wednesday morning across Southwest Florida, and the Florida Highway Patrol is providing some helpful hints to stay safe on the roads.

Drivers should remember to use their low beams, according to an FHP press release. Low visibility makes it even more important not to speed or drive distracted, the FHP said.

It’s also important to be aware of slow-moving or stopped vehicles. The FHP is advising drivers to “open your window to listen for additional traffic.”

Also, use road markings as a guide to stay within lanes. Drivers should be patient when driving, braking and using a signal; avoid passing other cars or changing lanes.

Need to pull over? Use a turn signal, pull off the road and turn your hazard lights on, the FHP advises.

FHP officials stress the importance of not stopping on a busy freeway or road, as the potential increases for possible multiple vehicle crashes.
