FORT MYERS, Fla. There’s a new trend in technology. “Freemiums”— a combination of “free” and “premium”— are influencing the way consumers use services on their electronic devices. But what are freemiums? “Freemium is a business model that essentially is any kind of program or game or service that is offered for free with the hope that you’ll pay extra to unlock new features and new services,” said Roger Cheng, executive editor of CNET. Tech experts expect to see a lot more freemium-based services and believe they’re more successful for product makers than 30-day trial periods. But some games that offer the option to pay for bonus levels and characters can be costly.
