On Monday, a proposed bill to give more protection to burrowing owls will bee discussed in Cape Coral.

More than 2,500 burrows can be found throughout the city and there are state laws in place to protect their nests, but some say there should be city laws.

“This is the long overdue protection, the community needs to come together to realize the long term economic effect if we should continue to decrease the population, says one resident.

Making it a city law would give local authorities in Cape Coral the right to enforce the laws instead of turning the cases over to Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The new law would also establish development guidelines for the city and permitting process for working near the burrows.

The proposal will be discussed tonight at the City Council meeting at 4:30 pm.
