Two of the busiest bridges in Southwest Florida are about to become more congested. Drivers can expect more lane closures on the midpoint and Cape Coral bridges for the remainder of the month.

The Lee County Department of Transportation said lane closures could start as early as Sunday and it could delay driver commutes for another two weeks.

The county is working on final updates to the midpoint and Cape Coral bridge, which means lane closures could occur seven days a week until May 30. Crews have been working on cleaning and re-coating the bridge since December.

Lee County Department of Transportation has not yet released specific times on the closure, but neighbors WINK News spoke with said they worry about congestion on alternative routes.

“They need to let people know when they’re going to do the maintenance,” said Pat Duncan, a driver, “the times so that they can plan ahead.”

The Lee County Department of Transportation is advising that drivers can plan ahead and use caution. Crews will also begin more work on the Cape Coral bridge next month.
