City Manager Charles T. Chapman IV says the City of Naples was the victim of a criminal cyberattack resulting in the theft of $700,000.

The funds were associated with a construction project underway this summer renovating 8th Street South. The sum was owed for work performed by Wright Construction Group installing utilities infrastructure. The matter is currently under a criminal investigation.

“We take cyber security very seriously. We actively train our employees to identify cyber security threats. In today’s business environment, it is not a matter of if you are going to be attacked, it’s a matter of when are you going to be attacked. Despite our best preventative measures, the City of Naples is now a victim of a cyber-crime. We are taking all the necessary steps to work with law enforcement in this matter. Additionally, we have filed claims with our insurance carriers and our banks.

City technology services staff are actively engaging in increasing our security measures,” states Chapman.

The city says details are limited at this time due to the criminal investigation.
