Punta Gorda Farmer’s Market goes virtual to help you get your fresh foods while social distancing

The Punta Gorda Farmer’s Market normally attracts hundreds of people every Saturday.

“This time of year it is elbow to elbow, shoulder to shoulder,” said market manager Jerry Presseller.

The farmer’s market brings out 81 vendors like Punta Gorda Chocolate and Wine.

“It’s fantastic as far as the amount of people that are available and coming out and having fun,” says owner Steph Herndon.

But the market came to a sudden halt in March when the city suspended all event permits to limit large gatherings.

“Even now, we have no idea when we are going to re-open,” Presseller said.

So organizers are taking the farmer’s market from the streets of downtown Punta Gorda and giving it a virtual spin so you can still get your fresh food as you practice social distancing.

“We want to make this as safe and it’s comfortable for everybody,” Herndon said.

Now, organizers are launching a “Virtual Farmer’s Market.” Customers can place their orders with 24 vendors that sell essential goods by Thursday night and pick them up Saturday morning at the old Carmelo’s Restaurant on Olympia Avenue.

“It’s really going to be just like a takeout food restaurant,” Presseller said.

A safe and spacious way for customers to get their hands on their favorite foods and help struggling businesses stay afloat.

“We want customers to know that we are here, we are open,” Herndon said.

The Fort Myers River District Farmer’s Market is also shifting its operations online. It features a similar system with curbside pickup and offers delivery. You can click here to check out that virtual market.
