A Cape Coral man was arrested early Friday morning after reports of a person shooting a gun in a wooded area near homes.

According to Cape Coral police, around 2:30 a.m., officers responded to the 1300 block of SE 24th Avenue due to a shots fired call.

Virgil Whipple was seen walking to the back of his home with a rifle and shots were heard a short time later. Officers responded to the home to investigate. As Officers were arriving, they heard gun shots coming from the back of the home. Police say Whipple was firing his weapon in a wooded area behind his residence, beyond the Cape Coral city limits.

Additional officers and Lee County deputies arrived at the scene to assist. Whipple walked back into his residence and when officers began speaking with Whipple and asked him to step out of his residence he began to put his hands in his pocket. Whipple would not follow the commands of Officers on scene and was taken into custody and charged with Resisting an Officer Without Violence.
