A Port Charlotte veteran has filed paperwork to create his own political party.

James Davis organized the MAGA Patriot Party after he and other registered Republicans became disappointed with government leaders over the years.

His MAGA Patriot Party will support another presidential run from Donald Trump no matter his future affiliation, Davis said.

Davis said hopefully his newly-formed political party will bring change and a stronger voice for the people.

“We’re trying to be a swing party so we kind of fit right in the middle of the two parties,” said Davis, who is planning a run against Sen. Rick Scott, R-Naples. “We’re not trying to split the ticket. We’re only trying to run in areas that we feel Republicans need to be replaced with stronger candidates.”

Davis said people are upset with some of the choices Scott has made and that’s why he is planning to run against the former governor of Florida turned U.S. Senator.

The statement of organization filed with the Federal Election Commission shows that the MAGA Patriot Party would be participating in joint fundraising with Donald J. Trump for President, Inc.

However, the Trump campaign replied with a disavowal notice to the FEC. The campaign said they had no knowledge of the MAGA Patriot Party.

“To be clear: DJTFP has no affiliation with MAGA Patriot Party National Committee, which is not authorized by Mr. Trump or DJTP,” the notice states. “DJTFP is placing this disavowal notice on the public record out of concern for confusion among the public, which may be misled to believe that MAGA Patriot Party National Committee’s activities have been authorized by Mr. Trump or DJTFP — or that contributions to this unauthorized committee are being made to DJTFP — when that is not true.”

Davis’s political party follows the policies of Trump, he said, but they are not affiliated with Trump.

“Our key things that we like are the American first trade policies and he committed himself to,” Davis said. “He kind of brought the power back to the people and he represented what we really wanted.”

Regardless, Davis said his party’s priority isn’t to support one candidate but to support the people.

“The biggest thing we need in the country right now is unification and that won’t happen if we have two parties that are so divided that we will never get back together,” he said.
