Lee County Sheriff’s deputies and Fort Myers police officers are responding to a deputy-involved shooting in downtown Fort Myers.
There is still a deputy and officer presence near Monroe Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fort Myers.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was set to have a press conference on Sunday evening. Instead, LCSO sent out a press release.
Within the release, LCSO says a deputy was crossing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fort Myers en route to the downtown jail. A car approached him as he was crossing the road.
There was a female passenger in that car frantically screaming at the deputy saying the driver, her boyfriend had a gun and that he wouldn’t let her leave.
The driver, Gustavo Reyes, 18, also reportedly made threats to the woman. That deputy then approached the vehicle to make sure the woman was safe.
While speaking with the woman, and after approaching the car, the deputy repeatedly asked Reyes to exit the car. He did not comply. The deputy also believe he looked “guilty and nervous.” That’s when the deputy discharged his weapon.
Both the victim and the deputy were unharmed during the shooting. However, the suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Gustavo Reyes could face charges of resisting without violence, false imprisonment (domestic violence), felony fleeing and attempting to elude, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
