Authorities are investigating after one person was shot in Bonita Springs. That person was airlifted from the scene in critical condition.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said they are investigating the shooting near Nomad and Safari drives in Bonita Springs. Deputies say the victim was shot in the chest.

The person was shot near a neighborhood park. Crime scene tape outlined Leitner Park for hours as investigators combed the scene.

The shooting unfolded as kids were being let out of school, prompting a lockdown at Bonita Springs Elementary school that was lifted shortly after.

One neighbor said they heard a gunshot.

For hours, detectives, K9s, crime scene forensics teams, and other Lee County Sheriff’s Office members worked to gather information. They were seen jumping the park’s barrier wall, digging through trash cans and looking for any bit of evidence.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said if there was any new information, it would be released on Thursday morning.

No further information is known at this time.
