Dunk City has parted ways with head basketball coach Michael Fly.

Florida Gulf Coast University announced they released Fly from the remainder of his contract and are seeking new leadership for the program, according to a news release.

The school said if it’s invited to play in a postseason tournament, it will allow Fly the opportunity to remain in place to coach during that time.

Fly has compiled an overall record of 55-59 and 30-27 (.526) ASUN mark in his four seasons as head coach since being named to the role in April 2018, the school said.

Fly spent seven years as an assistant coach on the Eagles’ staff before his promotion to head coach, according to his university bio.

The Eagles went 208-142 during Fly’s overall tenure with the program, including the team’s 2013 run in the Sweet Sixteen which captivated the nation and put the school on the map, according to the school.

“With deep appreciation for Coach Fly’s numerous sacrifices, efforts and contributions to FGCU over the past eleven years (on and off the court), in a gut-wrenching decision, I have decided that we need to transition to a different path and will be commencing a search for a new head men’s basketball coach,” said Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh. “We extremely value Michael’s friendship and love of the Green & Blue and wish him all the best personally and professionally in his future endeavors.”

Fly is the fourth head coach in the program’s history.
